Foreign nationals made 920,000 applications for PPS numbers made between 2002 and 2007, according to figures released by the Central Statistics Office (CSO).
The figures also show that over 390,000 were from Poland and the UK, with Polish nationals making approximately 270,000 applications and those from the UK 120,000.
The figures coincided with news that Dell is moving 1,900 manufacturing jobs from Limerick to Poland due to higher costs in Ireland, raising the possibility that immigration could become an issue in forthcoming local and European elections, elections in which foreign nationals (from the EU) will be entitled to vote.
The CSO estimates that of the non-nationals who found employment during the period, some 423,000 remained in their jobs at the end of 2007.
