EU may foot bill for migrants who want to go home

A FINE Gael TD who was branded as racist for suggesting that non-nationals should be offered incentives to return home may have been just a little ahead of his time.

Yesterday it emerged that the Department of Justice is to look at way of tapping into a €629m EU fund that aims to pay economic migrants who voluntarily decide to return to their countries of origin.

The EU's Return Fund will be available to all member states to provide cash to non-EU immigrants who cannot afford to live here or who have failed in their asylum applications.

But the Department of Justice confirmed last night that officials were examining the rules of the fund to see if it could be applied to EU nationals who want to return home.

That's giving more incentive for migrant workers to come here, knowing they'll get a free ticket home if they can't find work.

A similar scheme was put in place in France in the 70's to persuade migrants to go volontarily back home but it was a failure. The problem is that most EU countries have very generous welfare handouts, so it is better financially to stay in the EU if one is from the 3rd world. The only way for this to work is to have a EU wide policy that bar non EU citizens from getting any sorts of welfare pay outs beyond compulsory schooling and emergency healthcare.

Yes, Annon-October 5, 2008 4:57 AM.

Living off the Irish taxpayer and in a safer country is better than where they came from.

Why take a short term, end-all handout when they can leech the system for a longer period of time.

Hey, and the more children they have the more money is forwarded to them. It's a win situation for them to stay.

Good observation annon.
