One in 250 natives of Mauritius live in Ireland

The Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform, Dermot Ahern has confirmed that one in 250 of the Republic of Mauritius’s inhabitants have opted for life on these altogether greyer shores.

A total of 5,000 of the island’s 1.25 million Mauritian nationals are registered with the Garda National Immigration Bureau.

So great is the lure of Ireland that the Mr Ahern has been forced to clamp down on Mauritians’ visa requirements.

The numbers are incorrect.

The updated number is 3641 on student visa for a total of 3980 legal resident of Mauritius in Ireland.

According to an article in the Tribune eleven months ago,5500 Muritians came here since 2006.

Either way there shouldn't be any working here, there's a recession and Irish people should come first for jobs.

You are right! new visa is a great idea!

It is better the 3,641 foreign students of Mauritius spend their millions of euros for their studies and living expenses in the rest of EU than in Ireland.

And that the tourist from Mauritius avoid to spend their money in Ireland. They can travel freely in all of the Schengen area and the UK without visa, so no need to visit Dublin.

Thumbs up! Xenophobic sentiment is so good for the economy, keep the good work!

By the way only 46 work permit were given in 2009 to Mauritius citizens...

"Their millions of euros" Don't make me laugh.

I never mentioned tourists, I welcome tourists from wherever.

I'm concerned with those who come to Ireland, under the guise of students, to steal jobs from Irish people.

I know several Mauritians, they're here to make money just like the rest of the immigrants. They enrolled in some English language school but don't attend, and they work thirty nine hour weeks. That's ninteen hours stolen from an Irish national.

There is 3641 foreign students from Mauritius.

"On average we estimate that a student will spend between €7,500 and €12,000 per year depending on location and lifestyle." This is from the department of education for the living cost

If we consider €15,000 per year per student for living and schooling cost, we are talking of €54 Millions in the economy. It is so funny isn't it?

For the tourist, there is no Irish consulate in Mauritius, so don't worry no one is going to bother applying a visa by post, to spend money in Ireland.

Ireland is the only country in the world to impose a visa, while not controlling its land border. If citizens of Mauritius need to go in/out the country they are going to use Belfast airport instead of Dublin.

Good job and wonderful idea!

On the other hand, if the gov of Mauritius introduce a 100 Euro visa for the lovely Irish who like to go to Mauritius...it is going to be tough one to swim over to Mauritius to avoid border control..

We all know immigration is profitable, however, money shouldn't come before the welfare of Irish nationals.

You seem to be going off on a tangent here. The problem we nationalists have with foreign students, is the large numbers working more than the twenty hours per week they're allowed by law. Every hour above twenty they work is an hour stolen from an Irish national.

Why do you continue to talk about tourist when I've already stated that "I welcome tourists from wherever?"

Ireland peeople are too lazy compared to Mauritian people and that is why we get more hours to work. We do not steal any Irish hours and by the way I think it's the Irish people themselves who employs the Mauritian people. So it's better you go and ask to your own people why Mauritians get more hours to work....What you really know about Mauritius and its cultures!!!! You better find out and not try to be racism instead...rich people but poor mind

You have some balls coming to our country and calling us lazy.

I also couldn't give a damn about your culture, It's my culture I wish to preserve, if you are concerned with your culture then go back home to it.
